What's new in 1.4.1

Screenshot: the Time page, the year drawn as one day of 24 hours, with blocks for sleep, work or school and getting there
New

Where your year's time goes

Tap the clocks at the top of the screen and your year opens as a single day. Everything that takes your time is a block as tall as the hours it takes: sleep, school or work, getting there, meals, lessons.

Tap a block and you're shown where to change it. The hours nobody has claimed yet sit at the bottom of the day.

New

What's next?

A round ? sits beside the year button. Each press walks you through one part of the game: your time, the people in your life, school, cars, houses and more. A red dot means there's a part you haven't seen yet.

A shorter start

A new life now starts with a single card on the day you're born. After that, the year button takes you straight to your first day of school. The childhood dream is gone.

Redesigned

Your first school subject

The year school starts, your locker is waiting with a blank nameplate and a sticker for every subject. Tap one and you're walked to the place where subjects are picked, so you can find it again later.

Changed

Arranging your school year is free

Moving, dropping and swapping cards on the study board doesn't cost time anymore. Only dealing a new hand does. A carefully arranged year gets a good grade much more easily, and the board shows you around the first time you open it.

Fixed in 1.4.1: school

  • You can still move study cards after the year's time has run out.
  • Picking your first subject can't leave your year short of time.

Fixed in 1.4.1: everything else

  • Jumping to school no longer skips what happened in the years in between, like a relative's funeral.
  • The guide's hand lets go when you go somewhere else instead.
  • The time list now counts language courses and the hours you borrowed from next year.
Careers

Two careers you play

New

The Fashion Designer

Start your own label. Pick a cut, then draw the print on it pixel by pixel. The more care you put into a look, the better it scores.

Put your looks into a spring and an autumn collection, choose Atelier or Line and a price, and book a show to put it on the runway. Celebrities in the front row can make a night.

New

Where it sells

License a collection to stores and they make it and pay you a royalty on every piece. Or make it yourself, sell it online and open your own shop. The bar under the rail shows what each door will sell before you sign anything.

Redesigned

A football season you live

A season is 12 matchdays now, with a derby, a cup night and a decider among them. Play a match, simulate it or rest. Keep your form and fitness up to stay in the team, and if your club goes down, you go down with it. More on the footballer career.

New

Matches you play in 3D

The big nights are yours to play. Each one is a few attacks in a full stadium: run, pass, lob it over their heads, drop a shoulder and shoot. Defenders get their own game, where you tackle and slide to win the ball back.

On a phone you play with a stick and buttons. On a computer the keys are drawn on screen.

New

Dream your first year

The first time you take up fashion, a startup, music or football, you can dream the first year before you live it. A guide walks you through it with money that isn't yours. Nothing is kept when you wake up.

Borrow to start

Can't afford a microphone, a fashion kit or your first two collections? The bank will lend you the money, right from the career's own screen.

Life events

Things happen to you

Screenshot: an event card titled The boiler died in January, with the bill, a month's costs and the bank balance, and four answers: Fix it properly, Patch it, Loan shark and Go without heat
New

74 new life events

Every year brings something new. The boiler dies in January. The kitchen floods. A friend wants to borrow your car, a parent needs looking after, a stranger knocks on your door with food.

Each event is a card with a picture and a few answers, and every answer shows what it costs before you pick it.

New

Keeping score

Your friends notice what you buy, and they buy things too. Show off a new car and someone might go and get a better one. Find fault with theirs and the friendship takes the hit. You can also ask a friend with a car for a ride.

Rule change

Enemies need a reason

People only turn against you because of something that happened, and you'll have seen it on a card. Partners and classmates don't drift into hating you on their own anymore. A best friend you ignore for years will tell you they've given up.

Growing up

From the first breath

Screenshot: low-poly lungs on black, five empty stars and the word BREATHE Screenshot: a wooden crib mobile on lilac with two dream tiles hanging from it, Drive your friend's car and Join a better club
New

Your first breath

A life starts in the hospital. Tap the lungs in time to take your first breaths, then cry. After that, the next dream hangs from a mobile over your crib and you pick which one comes next.

New

Firsts

Teenagers get a first love, a first kiss and a first drink, and you decide how each one goes. Saying not yet is allowed. Homework in your second year at school is a paper collage you put together, or forget and leave to your parents.

New

Learn the game as you grow

New parts of the game introduce themselves as events. A broken toy, the clubs at school, a paper round, the job board at 16 and your first car each arrive as a card that opens the screen it's about.

Work

A job that keeps score

Screenshot: a payslip for an HR specialist, base salary, performance 84 against a promotion line at 80, a 3% rise, next year's pay and a Work extra hours button
Redesigned

The payslip

Your job is a payslip now: pay, grade, how you're doing and what next year pays. The next grade sits underneath with what it asks for. Your colleagues are on the slip too, and you can talk to them from there.

New

Performance

Every job has a performance score. Push it with extra hours and you're promoted, with a raise of at least 15%. Let it slide for two years and you can be let go. Each year you choose whether work comes first or your life does.

You

Look the part

Screenshot: the Casting screen, six women in a line-up against a height chart with the red-haired one picked, and name, country and birth year below
New

Casting

Design your character before you start. Pick a figure from the line-up, then a name, a country, a birth year, a skin tone and the colours you wear. It's behind the button in the corner of the start screen.

New

The wardrobe

44 outfits, designer editions, watches and chains. Buy something once and wear it whenever you like. Dressing well makes you more attractive, and your job's uniform is yours to wear too.

Rules

What works differently

Rule change

Inspiration for everyone

Anyone can bank inspiration now, from their first walk at six. Walks and books add to it, and from 16 it grows by itself, for any career.

New

Garages are property

Buy a garage on its own, use it or rent it out. You can buy a car with nowhere to put it, and it waits on the street. Houses come with garage spaces, and you can build more.

Rule change

Grip comes from the driven wheels

Front, rear and all-wheel drive cars feel different on the mountain road. You can fit aftermarket traction control to a car that didn't come with it.

New

Two stores, one collection

More than one store of the same kind can sell your collection. They share the shoppers, so each sells less than it would alone, and every extra one costs your label some prestige.

Fixed

Small things that were broken

Life events

  • An event can always be answered. If you can't afford the boiler, you can go without heat.
  • A currency change no longer shows up as a big raise.
  • An injury that needs more time than you have left takes it from next year.
  • The first-car event only comes between 18 and 21.
  • People made for an event don't appear in your contacts before you've played it.

Work

  • The promotion raise is the same on the payslip and on the year-end card.
  • A raise you put into your pension stays a share of your pay.
  • Spending a raise doesn't bill you in a year with no job.

Careers

  • Pressing the year button inside a career's dream stops the dream. It doesn't use up your year.
  • Fashion: the run you plan is the run you make and pay for, and Make works with an empty inspiration bank.
  • Fashion: leaving the career closes your label, but what's already in the shops keeps selling.
  • Fashion: opening or closing your shop asks first and shows what it costs.
  • Football: you're paid for the season you played before relegation cuts your wage.
  • Football: a transfer no longer gives you a second season in one year.
  • Startup founder: your runway counts your own pay and loan payments.
  • Investor offers never sell more of a company than you hold.

Cars, homes and screens

  • Road cars no longer turn up with a Formula 1 body, and muscle cars look like muscle cars.
  • A garage that burnt down holds no cars, and a smaller house never parks more cars than it has spaces.
  • You can still pick a study subject after you leave school.
  • Career screens have a margin on phones.
  • Three animations that never played now do.
